About us

We believe independence is a right, not a reward

Founded in 2012, Caring About Lives (CAL) has spent more than 14 years empowering individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities to achieve greater independence, self-sufficiency, and community inclusion — through person-centered support, skill development, advocacy, and compassionate care.

Our mission
To support, coach, and provide resources that empower adults with developmental disabilities to reach their potentials and desires.
To successfully integrate independently within their living, working, and social environments.
Our philosophy

The same choices afforded to everyone else

Individuals with developmental disabilities have the right to make responsible decisions consistent with the choices afforded to non-disabled citizens — including living in homes and neighborhoods of their choice, with people of their choosing.

These settings and lifestyles let people pursue their own interests, express their individuality, and take an active part in their communities. To exercise these rights, a person may need unique, individualized support — and that is exactly what we provide.

Our method

How we help people grow

We provide information, coaching, supervision, and real opportunities to practice — so people can build a creative, flexible, and independent life of their own choosing.

01

Decision-making

We help people make life decisions based on personal preference, and carry those decisions out effectively.

02

Practice & role-play

We coach and model skills, then create chances to practice and demonstrate what's learned.

03

Ongoing monitoring

We track changing needs and reflect them in each person's program plan and IPP.

04

Natural supports

We build a durable network of relationships — a majority of whom are not paid staff.

Person-centered

Every plan is built on choice, dignity, and each person's own goals.

Empowering individuals. Strengthening families. Transforming communities.

That is the work, every day. If you're a coordinator or family member, we'd love to talk.
